United Power Company, SAOG

In June 2009, MENA Infrastructure Fund acquired a 32.8% stake in United Power Company SAOG (UPC) from French energy giant, GDF Suez. UPC owns and operates a 270 megawatt power station in Manah, 180km south west of Muscat, capital of the Sultanate of Oman. It was the first independent power project to be developed in the Middle East with private sector participation. It also includes the associated transmission line linking the power plant to the outskirts of Muscat.

UPC was established in 1995 and started operations in 1996. Its initial capacity of 85 MW was expanded in 2000 by addition of two open cycle gas turbines and other auxiliary facilities. The project has been implemented and operated under a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (“BOOT”) scheme, wherein UPC is responsible for building and operating the plant up to 2020.

UPC is listed on the Muscat Securities Market, with 40% of its equity capital being publicly traded.
